Software for Project Management

QEI Exec 3.0, a software solution in particular for very large projects

London, UK - January 2002 - NOWECO, the distributor of management software, presents QEI Exec 3.0, a project management software in particular for very large projects and multi-projects. The combination of a very powerful database and CAD-like graphic functions allow a project management that meets the individual requirements of the user.

Projects, and even more large projects, distinguish from each other. They are individual and unique. Project management and the software used for project management has to take into account this individuality of projects. QEI Exec is a project management software that is designed to provide its users with the opportunity to manage projects as needed. QEI Exec is developed by PCF Ltd., England.

PCF Ltd. has been at the forefront of project based interactive graphics technology for fifteen years. The introduction of QEI software provided planners with the first truly interactive CAD based graphics, and PCF has been developing products ever since- focusing on area s that require challenging graphics solutions and consolidated management information. "Our guiding principle is that software should adapt to the client´s requirements, not the client to the software", explains Chris Fribbens, Managing Director of PCF Ltd. The latest result of the development efforts is the project management software QEI Exec 3.0.

The QEI Exec database contains a set of project data - calendar, task, resource and relationship information. This can be created within QEI or imported from other systems using the data exchange channels. Users interact with the information in the database via the QEI Exec application. This allows the user to access the project data directly through spreadsheet-like tables, or graphically as barcharts, networks or structures. Unlike other packages however the graphical representations of the project data are not simply predefined by the package, but use a CAD-like approach. To create a barchart, network or structure the user defines an electronic sheet, populates it with data elements (e.g. a selection of tasks from a particular work package) and then lays it out in a way that appeals to him/her, either using system tools such as automated sort routines or entirely by hand. This approach gives the user total control over the appearance of the data, rather than limiting the user to viewing and distributing the output of some layout algorithm embedded in the product.

These sheet definitions are also held within the QEI Exec database, and can be considered as "windows" through which the user can access the underlying project data. Changes can be made to data on any sheet, and these will be reflected instantly on any other sheet referencing that data. Sheets can be grouped together in folders within the database, further simplifying data management.

It is also possible to create graphics and hyperlinks on sheets, allowing you to create menus and navigation aids within the database. This approach makes managing large volumes of data much more straightforward, and allows the construction of "guided tours" or executive summaries for occasional users of the system.

Some special features of QEI Exec are comprehensive and rigorous set of Earned Value Functions, Time Chainage that are commonly used on linear construction projects such as roads, pipelines and tunnels, Boxcharts to allow to assign a second dimension to a bar of a barchart (such as resources), and a Macro Development Language.

NOWECO established a strategic partnership with PCF to provide customers with this powerful project management software. QEI Exec is available as PC, PC-LAN and Unix/Vax version.
