QEI Exec Project Management Software: Time Chainage Diagrams
Commonly used on linear construction projects such as roads, pipelines and tunnels, time chainage diagrams display activities against both time and distance. The principal benefit is the management of work in confined spaces where typically only one operation can be performed at a time.
PCF originally developed this extension to QEI Exec for TransManche Link, the group set up to construct the Channel Tunnel.
The diagram above shows a chainage diagram for the construction of a section of underground railway. The graphics were imported directly from a CAD system and display the plan and elevation of the line. The centre section is laid out so that the vertical axis displays distances to the same scale, with a horizontal time axis.
Different types of activity are represented by different colours and shading. Activities taking place at the stations (ie not moving along the line) can be seen as horizontal blue blocks, while activities that move along the line (eg boring tunnels, laying track, installing signalling equipment) can be seen as several sets of blocks in diagonal patterns. Final commissioning and test work can be seen as vertical blocks.
In this example, the work starts at one end of the line (top of chart) and moves along to the other. The system is also capable of managing projects where work starts at two or more points simultaneously and displaying the results as a composite chart.
Note also that this is an interactive system, not merely a chart produced by postprocessing project data. Users can for example click on the tasks and move them, with embedded rules managing potential clashes of time and/or space.
