Case Study: Network Rail
In 2001 PCF delivered Phase I of a time chainage based Possessions Management System to the Integrated Planning Unit of the LNE Zone of Network Rail (formerly Railtrack) in York. This system is designed to simplify the process of possessions management, whereby contractors take over sections of the railway network whilst carrying out essential maintenance. Coordination of this work currently involves manually combining and sorting spreadsheets submitted by the contractors, and then identifying areas of concern - for example when two contractors have planned to work in the same area simultaneously.
The Phase I deliverable gives Network Rail staff the ability to validate submitted spreadsheets at the click of a button and add the data to a central database. The task data can then be combined with mapping information (also held in the database) to generate chainage diagrams showing selected types of work in any area of the LNE Zone for any desired time window, with any clashing tasks automatically highlighted.
Phase II, which went live in 2002, migrated the database from Access to Oracle and deployed the system on the Network Rail corporate network via Citrix WinFrame.
