Benchmarking a process is, quite simply, comparing one process to another more effective one in order to find ways to improve the first. The comparison can spur rapid learning and change, and can become an integral part of organisation-wide learning and improvement.
Benchmarking can occur both within and outside of a company. It is often wise to benchmark within a company before looking outside. A particularly effective division, department, or location can act as a benchmarking partner for others.
